Region map

Education and politics predominate in New Jersey's Midlands. The section includes the state capital, Trenton, with several state and city-related museums, as well as a world-famous university, Princeton, and the state university, Rutgers. The Delaware and Raritan Canal, once one of the busiest waterways in the country, has been preserved for much of its length through the area as a hiking or boating venue. The Christmas crossing of the Delaware by George Washington's Revolutionary soldiers and the subsequent battle at Princeton are remembered in state parks.
